Steam King Seafood Restaurant, Kota Damansara

_-6

My parents found this place by fluke and quite enjoyed the food there. Hence second time round, they brought us there to try for ourselves. Steam king is situated in Kota Damansara, among the many restaurants there. Parking shouldn’t be much of a problem here, cause the lady boss books the parking lots in front of her shop, so just signal to her that you will be eating there and she’ll let you park right in front.

Inside at the back of the restaurant, we are greeted with a 4 step tier of aquariums, teeming with live fish together with the price on each type of fish. For a small shop, they had quite a variety of different fishes to choose from.

Their specialty here as you can tell from its name is steamed fish so that to be the must have on the menu that night. The lady boss is quite friendly and she will recommend the different fishes/ dishes to you. ( Though be careful cause they tend to recommend the most expensive fish, which is the ‘Soon Hock’ which comes up to RM16.80 per 100g, that will come up to about Rm180 for a fish).

Our orders: -

Steamed black snapper ( rm5.80/100g)

Ham Dan Pork ribs

Curry Tofu

Sai Tai Tin Wong ( The four great emperors)

Total rm103 (4 pax)

The norm would probably be the red snapper but today we ordered the black snapper as recommended by the lady boss. I like eating snappers cause they have very big bones so its easier to eat. This black snapper was no exception. The meat tasted very fresh as the fish came straight out of the tank, it was very juicy as if the meat had soaked up the fish sauce around it. The texture of this fish is very firm and abit chewy. Highly recommend to try their steam fish, we all loved it.

As the lady boss was reciting the menu to us, I caught the word ham dan followed by pai quat ( pork ribs). Instantly I told her, ‘ I plate please’. One of my favourite styles of cooking is ham dan *anything*. Most of the time is ham dan crab or ham dan squid , but I’ve never heard of ham dan pork ribs. So to our delight, our plate arrived and it was delicious. A combination of our 2 different ingredients, ham dan and pork, it couldn’t get any better than this. It was very crunchy cause it was deep fried. A very unique dish.

The curry tofu was also a  house speciality and according to the lady boss it was one of its kind.  It had egg tofu, seafood ( prawns , squid and cuttlefish) and at the bottom was steamed egg. It is quite unique I must say especially with the steamed egg at the bottom. The different textures came together nicely and the curry was nice and santany.

Lastly, for some fibre, we went with the sai tai tin wong because the aunty also recommended us to take this. As much as I like this dish, I felt that it lacked the extra kick because it was missing petai. I love mine with petai. This dish had lady’s fingers, four angled beans, long beans and egg plant all stir fried with belacan. For those non petai lovers, I think you would like this.

So for a nice good steamed fish meal, this is the place to come. It gets pretty packed during dinner time as we were there around 7pm. And when we were there that day it was raining, but it was still crowded. They will also give you complimentary soup which is a plus. Our soup that day was bittergourd soup, which wasn’t too bitter cause I was able to drink it :)

Restoran Lan Je – Tilapia in Kota Damansara

On one of the very hot afternoons over the weekend, we decided to try out Restoran Lan Je which has been made famous for their steamed black tilapia. This is one of the outlets; having two other ones in Rawang and Balakong. With the original branch located in Rawang and having been in operation for several years, they have opened this branch in Kota Damansara. So for those not looking to travel too far for steamed tilapia, then this might be an option for you.

The steamed black tilapia is topped with diced ginger, soy bean paste and soya sauce. The fish was cooked rather well and outshines a few of the other dishes that we tried that afternoon. The fish itself had a smooth texture and you also have the choice to have it with chilli. The fish here is of relatively good quality as you don’t get too much of that fishy after taste.

Pan Mee, Traditional Recipe Restaurant – Kota Damansara

Traditional Recipe Restaurant is known for their special hand made teared noodles (pan mee), so one afternoon we decided to give it a try. It is located in Kota Damansara, which can get quite busy especially during lunch hours. You would be quite lucky to get a parking spot just outside the restaurant, so usually we would park a little further walk.

Traditional Recipe Restaurant

The restaurant is decorated with many wooden ornaments as well as newspaper cuttings on reviews of this establishment.

An interesting drink that we thought we should try; sour plum coke. On a hot day, this was quite a thirst-quenching drink.

The pan mee we ordered was of the soup form and was quite tasty. It had a simple soup base with some greens and ikan bilis. The colourful noodles were cooked well as they had good texture and held form.

Teared Noodles

Teared Noodles

The Farang Teared Noodles had the same soup base and included crab sticks and minced meat as the ingredients. The noodles that they provided us with however were not hand made (as they did not have it available), nor were they anything too special. Instead, they used a pasta similar to fusilli.

Besides the Teared Noodles, there were other dishes yet to be sampled, which includes Shanghai Dumplings, Lui Cha Tea Package and their Traditional Tofu.

Caliente Mexican Cosina, Mexican Restaurant, Kota Damansara

Caliente Mexican Cosina

Caliente Mexican Cosina

We have been looking for a place that served authentic Mexican food, and after asking around, one of our friends, Xiao recommended us to try this place, Caliente in Kota Damansara. (Caliente means ‘HOT’ in Spanish).

Interior of Caliente

Interior of Caliente

The interior was nice and cozy, dimly litted and some nice cushy wall seats. We pretty much got the whole restaurant to ourselves cause its still very new and also we went there early as well.

Our orders that night were :-

Nachos Grande RM11.50

Grilled Beef/Chicken Buritos RM14.50

Chicken and Beef Fajitas   RM15.00

Beef Tacos Rm13.50

Chicken Enchiladas RM12.95

Checken Chimichangga RM13.95

Nachos and Salsa dip

Nachos and Salsa dip

First up was our nachos grande to kick start our mexican meal. We were very impressed. The serving was big and topped with generous serves of melted mozarella and cheddar cheese, jalepeno peppers, olives, shredded lettuces and minced meat. And when dipped into the pico de gallo sauce…Ooolala…delicious.

Beef Tacos

Beef Tacos

Next up, our order of beef tacos came arranged nicely on a plate together with a side of salsa sauce. When you are eating a taco, you must use your hand to fully enjoy the flavour. Topped with lots of lettuce, minced meat, tomatoes, onions and lots of cheeeesssee.

Grilled Chicken Buritos

Grilled Chicken Buritos

The grilled chicken buritos came topped with a dollop of sour cream and cheese and also a side of mexican rice. The filling was thick juicy pieces of grilled chicken. Very tender and the flavour a perfect 10. Nice and piping hot. I was searching online about the difference between a burito and a enchilada but I couldn’t get a definite anwer. Some said that enchiladas are baked, and buritos are not, or enchiladas can be served stacked on each other or served flat?? I dunno, so if any of you have an idea, do let us know.

Chicken Fajitas

Combination Chicken n Beef Fajitas

The chicken fajitas came with a basket of freshly made flour tortilla wraps, a hot plate with slices of grilled chicken, beef and caramelised onions and also a plate of fresh lettuce, tomatoes and shreded cheese. Assembly of your very own combination fajitas is strictly DIY. I must add, the meat was done to the par. Very juicy and very tender, especially the beef.

The pricing is very reasonable for real mexican food. Unlike those you get in chillis/ TGIF where an order of a Fajita tower can come up to at least RM29.90. This is only half the price.

Will definitely be back here for more Mexican cuisine. We loved this place and whats more we found out the chef used to work in a Mexican restaurant in the USA for 26 years before he came back to Bolehland to start his own Mexican restaurant. A definite must for those looking for real mexican cuisine.

Recommended by our friend Val to check out this kopitiam. We were told the cendol here was good and cheap. So onwards we headed, to Pak Li’s Kopitiam situated in Kota Damansara.

Very nice ambience. Like a typical kopitiam, old stools, marble tables and lots of people. Oh yes and free wifi. ( You will have to get the password from them). Looking at the menu, we realised one thing, the food and drinks here were really really reasonable. Almost half the price of what we would usually pay outside. No wonder it was packed.

Pak Li's Kopitiam + Gula Malacca

Pak Li's Cendol + Gula Malacca

We ordered our cendols and it came in little glass bowls and the servings were just right for one person. Not too much and not too little. The packed shaved ice was packed in nicely into a tiny ice mountain on top of the usual cendol goodies (jagung, red beans, santan) topped with green cendol on the top. Another perk is that you get to control your own sugar intake cause they give you your own gula malacca to pour over it.

The cendol was good and refreshing. We all loved it. If we weren’t so full we might have gone for seconds. Great place to come to unwind, have a drink and  a dessert. Plus the price is so reasonable. Our cendols only cost RM2.60 each.

So if you are in the area and feel like something cold and refreshing and cheap head on over to Pak Li’s kopitiam. We did..=)
