Email Interview with Babe in the City – KL!
Still want to know more about the food blogging community? Well not to worry, we’ve got you covered!
This week, we’ve got the pleasure of welcoming Babe_KL from Babe in the City – KL which is run by husband and wife team of Babe_KL herself and her hubby, Capt’n Hook.
1. Can you give us an introduction of yourself, when and how did you start out and what made you love food so much to start a blog about it?
I started out reading blogs way back in 2004. Back then there isn’t that many interesting blogs in Malaysia and most of them blogged about their social life, technical stuff and all. The majority of food bloggers then resides in the West and Singapore. It was one of the food blog (now defunct) that inspired me to start my own blog. At that time I have no intention to blog solely on food but I’ve no idea when Babe in the City – KL suddenly became one hahaha…
I was told many times that Babe in the City – KL is the pioneer food blog in Malaysia but seriously, I’ve no idea and I would loved to know if it’s real too. My earlier posts were pretty bad. It was basically stuff of what I ate and the photography was terrible. As time goes by, I was not only reviewing what I ate, I started to blog about the food I cooked and baked. My original intention of blogging about the food I cooked was my posts are basically for me to archive what I’ve cooked. It’s very handy for me to search the recipes this way rather than flipping through my piles of printouts and books.
My hubby, Capt’n Hook joined Babe in the City – KL as the co-blogger in late last year. I’m the one doing the writing mostly but he contributed his time and money, spending me makan! It pays to have a husband who have all the cravings, otherwise I won’t be going places on my own. Anyway, he’s the biggest critic so it made sense to drag him into the water. He represented Babe in the City – KL in Brand’s Blogger Challenge in Singapore last December and had a blast there. (more…)
Email Interview with EatingAsia
We recently had the pleasure of interviewing renowned food blogger Robyn Eckhardt with recognition to the experienced photographer David Hagerman over at EatingAsia
Robyn’s site was recently voted as one of the top 50 food blogs in the world, as voted by the Times Online.

1. Can you give us an introduction of yourself, when and how did you start out and what made you love food so much to start a blog about it?
I’m an American who’s been living in Asia, off and on, for going on 14 years. In mid-2005 I and my husband (the blog’s photographer) moved to KL and started the blog. We’d long been the types to travel solely for food; he’s been photographing for years and I’ve been writing for years (albeit as an academic). We started the blog to document our explorations of KL’s marvelous hawker stalls and also as a way to force ourselves to practice our crafts.
2. Just like other food blogs, your site has been up for a long time and has gained quite a following. What do you think is the key factor to your success?
I’m not sure really. It may be that we’re different from most other blogs out there, in that we stick to street food/casual eateries and cover a wide swathe of Southeast Asia rather than sticking just to one place. We try to present not just food reviews (which I find really boring to write) but slices of life, bits of culinary culture and traditions, insights into the people and customs and cultures behind the foods we eat. Also – and I can say this because I’m not the photographer – the photos are pretty nice and go beyond close-ups of various dishes. I know from the comments that a fair number of readers don’t read at all – they just look at the pictures! Which is absolutely fine. We have no ‘formula’ — I post when I have time and when I feel like it, and I post about whatever I feel like writing on at that moment, on that day.

3. What is your favourite food of all time?
That is an absolutely impossible question to answer. Right now three things come to mind: bucatini al amatriciana, assam laksa, and the soft pink guavas you can get in southern Vietnam at certain times of the year.
4. What is your favourite restaurant of all time?
I don’t even have to think about that – Sek Yuen, hands down. That place has really got soul.
5. Currently, what is the one tip about food blogging you would give to new food bloggers?
Be true to yourself – don’t blog in a ’style’, and don’t blog to become a star. Blog because you love food.
6. What do you think about the food culture we currently have in Malaysia?
I’m disturbed by the popularity of foreign franchises and the mushrooming of Starbucks outlets. I was just in Northern Thailand and it’s nearly impossible to find local coffee anymore – it’ll happen here too, eventually. At the same time I’m heartened by the passion Malaysians maintain for their hawker food favorites; in terms of food, I don’t think KL will resemble Singapore anytime soon, and that’s a good thing IMO.

7. Your final thoughts about food you’d like to share with the Feedmelah.com readers?
When it comes to eating, go out on a limb when you travel. Food is one of the best ways I know of connecting with strangers.

Email Interview With Ipoh Mali Talak Sombong!
Continuing with our quest of getting to know our fellow food bloggers, we recently interviewed Jason of Ipoh Mali Talak Sombong!
1. Can you give us an introduction of yourself, when and how did you start out and what made you love food so much to start a blog about it?
As you can read from title of my blog, I’m originally from Ipoh. I was exposed to the wide array of food available in Ipoh few years back after I got to know a bunch of friends who like to eat out, and my interest in food was ignited. That time, they frequently mention that we should document all the eateries we tried, compile them and put on a food portal for public viewing, but the idea doesn’t seem worked out. I, on the other hand, started to read food blog (the first food blog I read that time was I Am BM Kia!), took one step ahead by purchasing my first digital camera and started Ipoh Mali Talak Sombong. Like most food bloggers, I only talk about food and eating places at first, but after two years of blogging, I started to venture into food photography and now, I’m also a regular contributor to Food Street as a freelance food reviewer. And by the way, Ipoh Mali will turn 2 on this coming 27 December!
2. Just like backStreetgluttons and Cumi & Ciki your site has been up for a long time and has gained quite a following. What do you think is the key factor to your success?
Actually it’s not really that long, just 2 years (by 27th Dec 2008). That time when I came up with the blog, food blogging scene was relatively new and most food bloggers were excited to blog hop, write comments etc. Subsequently, we held the first food bloggers gathering at Sandias, Bukit Damansara on the 27th April 2007 and we made quite a number of friends, who also turned out to be my readers. You can say that, the gathering actually helped to promote our blogs!
3. What is your favourite food of all time?
Ais kacang with plenty of condiments and a scoop of ice cream!
4. What is your favourite restaurant of all time?
This is a bit difficult. I practically like all places with nice food but so far, Famous Seremban Favourites at Sunway Mas has my vote for dishing out mouth-watering char siu with consistent quality and taste.
5. Currently, what is the one tip about food blogging you would give to new food bloggers?
If there’s by any chance you could talk to the proprietor, try to learn more or get some tips on how the food is prepared. For me, food blogging is not just merely order, take pictures, eat and write but also the knowledge you can get through your gastronomical adventure. Also, be adventurous – there’s no point to constantly go for the food from similar type of restaurants or those which are already famous. I’m sure many readers would love to hear about a particular wooden shack in Old Klang Road that serves good beef noodles rather than a few similar posts about a chic and posh establishment.
6. What do you think about the food culture we currently have in Malaysia?
Still going strong but with plenty of char chan teng, kopitiams and fusion cafes mushrooming every where, it’ll be a doubt whether the younger generations will still remembers how does wood-fried Hokkien mee or the good ol’ authentic Ipoh white coffee tastes like in the future.
7. Your final thoughts about food you’d like to share with the Feedmelah.com readers?
Proprietors can upgrade their premise to attract customers but at the end, service and the passion on food preparing are the most important factor in long term run. Sadly, these two factors are usually not emphasized in the real business world.
End of the interview.
Email Interview With Two Super Heroes
We recently had the pleasure of interviewing a superhero, food blogging, tag-team couple at toosuperheroes.blogspot.com
1) Can you give us an introduction of yourself, when and how you started out and what made you love food so much to start a blog about it?
We are two superheroes with abnormal capacity and desire for food, travelling places and enjoying the best life has to offer…Well, more than a year ago, ‘A Tale of Two Superheroes’ started out as a sort of chronicles of our lives as a couple of superheroes. So yeah, we never actually intended for it to start out as a food blog. It was only when we discovered that food seems to be a dominant ‘figure’ in our lives as we simply can never seem to say NO to food, that we felt that we should showcase the many memorable foodie figures we’ve tasted. And besides, it’s FOOD, glorious food! Haha.
2) Your site is relatively new to the food blogging scene, just like ours. What is the greatest challenge you face in growing it and getting the word out about your blog?
Well, we don’t really make an effort out of promoting our food blog, because we prefer taking ‘A Tale of Two Superheroes’ on a slow and easy ride as our journal to commemorate the good and (the bad!) food that we’ve tasted thus far in our lives. Perhaps then on one fine day many many years from now…we could actually sit down and literally browse through Superhero S’ many food experiments and laugh about them, or rub our belly and drool at the many delicious food we’ve tasted!
3) What is it about your website that you are most proud of?
The fact that we’ve made soooooo many friends through it! It’s amazing how a simple food blog can actually find its way into so many people’s lives… and we’re most thankful for the beautiful friendships we’ve made throughout the time our tales began right through to this very moment.
4) What is your favourite food of all time?
Wow…omg…this is so difficult to answer. *sweats* Haha.
Hmm…we would probably go with Sushi Zanmai’s many Japanese foodie selection! Haha…we’re soooooo crazy about them, we’d usually fly over there quite a few times in a month. But when we’re back home to Superhero S’ hometown in Malacca, we never fail to wallop the chicky rice balls too….! and the yong tau foo, and wait…back in KL, there’s always our favourite Malay economy rice at Padang, Serdang…and oh..there’s also the sinful KFC and Domino pizza… Haha. You see, we can never list down a favourite. :p
5) Currently, what is the one tip about food blogging you would give to new food bloggers?
Always remember to eat… EAT….and EAT!
6) What do you think about the food culture we currently have in Malaysia?
It’s always a food heaven here in Malaysia. We celebrate literally every single occasion with food! Oh, food….how can we live without you?? Haha.
7) Your final thoughts about food you’d like to share with the Feedmelah.com readers?
Well, blogging about food has turned Superhero S into a cooking machine. Haha. And Superhero W as the super eating machine. And for the sake of our readers, we’ve even made silent sacrifices to our pocket to explore the many different kinds of wonderfully delicious foodie out there. So, yeah…food will always be a huge part of the two superheroes’ lives. Because it brought them so many beautiful memories, and so many fulfilling meals! *grins*
Many many thanks to all of you guys at feedmelah.com for this wonderful opportunity. Thanks! *sob sob*

Email Interview With backStreetGluttons.com
We recently had the pleasure of interviewing a team of fellow food bloggers over at backStreetGluttons.com.
1) Can you give us an introduction of yourself, when and how did you start out and what made you love food so much to start a blog about it?
We started off using Blogspot from Google in August 2006 after we read in the papers about some top food KL blogs in the net and decided we could also do some experiment with the net and talk about our experiences with all the strange food we have taken all over the places , especially in the backlanes.
Our objective was to highlight special dishes/places which people talk about with some passion, on top of getting familiar with the free blogging software. Our involvement with blogging was thus not so much because we love food so much but rather because we like to talk about the food that many ppl talk about , but from our point of view , which could be totally different from another perspective as eating is about one’s experience in the place , the people the packaging etc.
We seldom go into serious details about the food itself as such, as the enjoyment or not of food is very personal. We are basically corporate people with some involved in own business ventures..
2) I understand your site has been up for a really long time and is now one of the top food blog sites in Malaysia. What do you think is the key factor to your success?
Not that long really, about 2 years + a few months. Probably our readers follow our blog as being not serious and sometimes we do write about some strange places and strange food! With some other things thrown in.
3) What is it about your website that you are most proud of?
We are different from the normal cafe / top restaurant over-reviews . Indeed we have noticed many food bloggers blog about the same old “famous” places. We avoid cafes if we can , unless there is something funny or different.
4) What is your favourite food of all time?
Assam laksa and some Thai pungent dishes.
5) Currently, what is the one tip about food blogging you would give to new food bloggers?
Talk about experiences, not so much about the food, afterall we have to leave food preparation and tastes to the real experts.
6) What do you think about the food culture we currently have in Malaysia?
Not so original. mostly same type of dishes same style in many new cafes . some of the new cafes in shopping malls look plastic, like some imports. the honky and european influence is quite strong . We are not so sure about the malaysian identity, except for the old ( 30 years ) hawker stalls or those behind the main roads
7) Your final thoughts about food you’d like to share with the Feedmelah.com readers?
Waitresses / shopowners have to improve basic customer service/etiquette which is non existent in some shops. Try to promote local food and raise it to a new level of cleanliness and presentation. Use clean utensils! Really believe that a customer is King! Customers also have to exercise respect for the shops and have understanding too. Life and making $$ is not easy.
