Choong Kee (Kampar) Claypot Chicken Rice, Damansara Jaya
After driving past this place numerous times and seeing the long queue of people outside, we knew that there must be something special here. So being foodies as we were, we decided to dine there and see for ourselves.
We were lucky enough to get a seat that day as it was the weekend dinner rush. It was packed and some people even left after seeing the crowd. The restaurant is very clean and brightly lighted and surprisingly cooling. Maybe cause they had about 6 fans inside.
The menu of this restaurant is simple and straight forward. It was basically a laminated A4 paper. For fickled minded diners who just can’t decide on what to have, fret not as the only main meal on the menu is Claypot Chicken Rice. The only hard decision you have to make is whether you want it with salted fish, chinese sausage or more chicken. Not that hard of a decision to make. You can also order a side of vegetables and steamed soup.
After waiting for about 20 mins, yes, we did wait for some time, our food finally arrived. Generous amount of chicken and also ham yui ( salted fish ), the smell was great! We came here thinking that this will be just another normal claypot chicken rice dish, but after mixing it and eating it, we were quite surprised because it was really tasty. Like really really tasty. I think its the sauce and maybe the salted fish. The rice was also very soft not like some claypot rice where its abit hard and lumps together. We ordered 2 big claypots for the 4 of us, and we finished ALL.
We also ordered a side of vegetables. Remember to always have greens with your meal for that added fiber..:) The dish was quite average with the vegetables being quite fresh. We also ordered one lotus root steamed soup. But this was so –so . The soup wasn’t tasty enough, maybe because the rice was so tasty that it just stole the limelight from the rest of the dishes..haha.
All in all, good place to come. But, be prepared to wait. Another alternative is to call in advance and place your order as thats what we saw some tables doing, or even better, call and take away. Drive by 20 mins later pick up your rice and dine in the comforts of your own home.

The Magic Wok Restaurant , Damansara Jaya
Recently, we brought our friend Anselm who’s just gotten back from Germany to have a good chinese style dinner at Magic Wok.
This restaurant is famed for many dishes and playing host, we wanted to impress our friend. Hence, we ordered some of their specialities which we have listed below. But since there were only 3 of us, we could only order so much.
Our orders that night was :-
Magic Wok Special Yuen Tai (Speciality) RM25
Tau fu with abalone slices (Speciality) RM 12
Twin style Kai lan (Speciality) RM12
As you can see for yourself, the Yuen Tain Special looks so good with all its shining glory. Yuen Tai as I’ve come to learn is actually the thigh area of the pig. It has a very thick fat layer over it, but the meat inside is very tender. This dish comes with a side of steamed buns, in which you can dip in the sauce. Delicious. They will actually help cut the pork for you into bite size pieces so its easier for you to savour the taste. The sauce was sweet, if I remembered correctly, there was a hint of cinnamon?? but i’m not sure. It was very yummy.
Next up, our tau fu dish which came with slices of abalone. (Well, I don’t think this was real abalone cause of the price, but it sure tasted like the real thing). I personally really liked this dish cause the tau fu was very soft and the sauce was very tasty. Not to mention the abalone, which I probably ate the most out of the 3 people there that night.
For our source of fibre that night, we opted for kai lan. The reason why this dish was called twin style is because the same vegetable is done in two different cooking styles. The stalks are done the usual way which is ‘cheng chau’ lightly fried in oil. While the leaf was shredded into tiny shreds and deep fried so it gave it a very crunchy feel. Almost like eating vegetable chips. Yum.
One thing I must definitely mention about this restaurant is that the service they gave that day was impeccable. I was down with a slight cold that night, and the staff was so considerate, they actually asked whether I was cold and then turned down the fan. They also brought me a big mug of warm water to make me feel better. How good is that? And I did..with the food, warm hospitality how couldn’t I?
This is a great place for family dinners and also to show off to your visiting friends traditional chinese cooking. The food is consistent and gets a thumbs up.

Vary Pasta, ‘Vary Affordable Western Food’, Damansara Jaya
Located in a quiet corner of the row of shoplots that surround Atria shopping centre lies an unknown Western food restaurant called Vary Pasta (no, it’s not a spelling mistake) and it claims to have the cheapest Western food in town. I’m not going to bet a million dollars on it, but I think he may have a good claim to that statement.
The owner’s story is a little different to that of a resteraunter as he used to run the Western food stall in a coffee shop near KDU before setting up his own place. Usually Western food stalls in coffee shops are quite basic, you wouldn’t hear them ask, ‘would you like a vinigerette sauce with your salad sir?’ and the only mushroom soup they serve either came out of a can or was made from some sort of powder.
So it’s quite a suprise that when this guy opened up his own restaurant selling similar dishes to his original stall, he has things like fresh mushroom soup, vinegerette dressing and fresh herbs in his dishes. The mushroom soup was a refreshing change as it had a variety of fresh mushrooms blended to make the dish, no powdery after taste like some out-of-the-can soups you usually find in some Western places.
Another dish that we ordered was the garlic herb sphagetti. Although some may confuse it for aglio olio, it isn’t. It comes with certain main meals, so make sure you know what comes with your main before ordering this as a starter. It is made with garlic, olive oil, fresh herbs (corriander I think), mushrooms and cold salsa on the side.
Another pasta you should try is the sphagetti carbonara, which was made with a rich creamy carbonara sauce and bacon bits inside.
As for the mains, they’re all mostly meat dishes, with chicken paella being one of the few exceptions.

Chicken Cordon Bleau - Was a little tough for my tastes. But the brown sauce helped soften it a bit.
These photos were actually compiled over 2 trips to the restaurant, but for each it should only cost you just under rm20 per person including some small starters, but it depends on what you order for your main. Average cost of mains is between RM10 – RM 30++ but that’s for the pork knuckle, which I haven’t tried yet.
