LongTable Traditional Nyonya food, Plaza Glomac, Kelana Jaya
This nyonya shop is still relatively new, opened a few months ago at Plaza Glomac. Long Table was established by a family where they wanted to preserve the typical nyonya style cooking of Penang.
We were treated to sample some bowls of Penang assam laksa. This laksa had a very thick fish broth, mostly from the amount of shredded fish, in this case ikan kembung. It was very tasty especially when eaten with the ‘har gou’ (shrimp paste).
For starters, we had cucur udang. This cucur udang defers abit from the usual one we get from the roadside because the batter used was lighter, and it didn’t give that heavy feeling. Furthermore, it was mostly bite size pieces, so it doesn’t take up too much space in the tummy for the more good food to come.
Roti babi. This I only thought we can get in Penang, but Long Table offers this delicacy in their humble restaurant as well. As the name says, this is bread filled with a filling of pork, potatoes, carrots and peas. Eat it by dipping it in the lea perrins sauce which comes together with it.
Our first main dish came, which was Ikan Gulai Tumis aka curry fish. The fished used here in this dish was black pompret and it came packed with ladies fingers. Not too spicy because I was able to eat it. The fish also gave some sweetness to the curry.
Sambal Petai Prawns was up next. A petai lover, I absolutely loved this dish because they were so generous with the petai, as well as the prawns. Went really well with my rice. Yummy.
Next was Ince Kabin or fried chicken. This fried chicken came with a dark brown colour, almost looked like it was burnt, but I later learnt that it was how it was marinated. I found the chicken abit hard initially when I bit into it, but once you get to the meat, its really quite tender and juicy. It also came with a sprinkle of tiny keropok, which all of us finished up in no time.
And how can we have a nyonya meal without ‘Ju Hu Cha’. Eaten together with the fresh lettuce, this dish was very refreshing. Furthermore, the black chinese mushrooms in this dish, helped soak up alot of the moisture, hence it almost had a juicy texture to it.
Steamed otak otak was one of the final dishes. I like this version of the otak otak as compared to the ones that are grilled, because this one retains more moisture since its steamed. It doesn’t feel too dry. Furthermore its wrapped in banana leaf, it smells extra fragrant.
To close our meal, we finished off with some sweet desserts. Onde-onde and Jemput Jemput aka Co-codok. I loved the onde onde especially when I bite down into the center where the gula malacca will come gushing out. You’ll keep going back for more.
The jemput jemput, I haven’t really tasted it before this, but if i remember correctly it was actually deep fried mashed bananas. Interesting, but this should be eaten hot because if not, it’ll go all soft and have that ‘masuk angin’ feel to it.
We really enjoyed our time there at LongTable. Good food and good company. You can never go wrong with those two combinations.

FT: Ah Cheng Laksa, Damansara Cineleisure
Edmund from Ah Cheng Laksa recently invited us to eat dinner at the Ah Cheng Laksa branch at e@Curve (formerly Cineleisure Mutiara Damansara) a while back to sample a few of his dishes.
Myself, Steve and Sue Ann were there as well as fellow blogger, Timothy from 3 Meals of Goodness.
It’s always nice to meet other people who have the same interest as us and admittedly, we’ve not done it enough… perhaps more in the future?
But anyway, back to the food. Edmund let us sample a few noodles dishes, some soup and some rice dishes. (more…)
Kedai Kopi Swee Kong @ Pulau Tikus, Penang
On our last day in Penang, we decided to head to Pulau Tikus to have our lunch. We remember seeing a crowded coffee shop while driving in the area during our hunting trail. This coffee shop is situated directly opposite the Pulau Tikus police station.
After many wrong turns and many road stops to check our faithful Penang map, we manage to back track and re-located this coffee shop. And we’re glad to say, no regrets on ending our Penang trip eating here.
Shene had apparently eaten here before many many years ago, and excitedly pointed out that the char kuey teow here was good. ( Till that day, we still have yet to eat a good plate of char kuey teow). The assam laksa stall also caught my eye as the uncle was preparing many many bowls of assam laksa to serve. Also, at the back of the shop was a stall displaying the sign famous wan tan mee. So In the end, we ordered 2 plates of char kuey teow, 2 bowl of assam laksa ,1 plate of wan tan mee and 1 bowl of wan tans.
Our plate of char kuey teow came, and we knew then that we have come to the right place. This was the char kuey teow we were looking for. It was just perfect and only for a price of RM3.00 (egg) . Look at the huge prawns, in KL we only get shrimp size prawns plus this had an added bonus of some ju yau char ‘ fried pork fat’. Delicious.
The assam laksa was by far one of the best I have tasted. The broth for the assam laksa was not too thick so it was quite light on the palate. All the ingredients blended in very well with each other and 1 bowl was not enough. So after finishing the first bowl we proceeded to seconds, and even after that I was still craving more. Priced at only RM2.50 per bowl who can resist?
The wan tan mee was a different style to the one found here in KL. The texture of the noodles was slightly different, more chewy I would say. It was the wan tans that had us going. The wan tans were very big. It almost looked like miniature curry puffs and it was full of meaty goodness inside. It finished very fast after it got to our table.
We will definitely come back here the next time we are Penang. We loved the food at this place very very much and its cheap too!! Average price for a meal is RM2.50 – RM3.50. If only KL were so cheap, then having a food blog won’t cost us so much. haha.

Mix Cafe, Phileo Damansara I, Petaling Jaya
This café was given life 10 years ago, when my aunty and uncle decided to open their café in Phileo. I guess they got tired of being bossed around at work, and decided to be their own bosses, hence the birth of Mix Café.
Mix café as its name suggests sells Mix rice (economy rice) and also ala carte meals ranging from Asian to Western. It is unlike any other coffee shop that serves economy rice but rather it is the neighbourhood (officehood) cafe with a clean, comfortable ambience and friendly service. Most of the patrons to the shop are those working around Phileo itself and is packed during the lunch hours.
Feedmelah decided to pay them a visit recently to sample some of their food. We went for their daily house specials which varies daily. On the menu that day (Friday) was their famous assam laksa and also hainanese chicken rice balls. Drinks (soya bean/sugar cane/ soft drinks) are also available for selected lunch specials.
The assam laksa, as always, never disappoints. It came generously served in a big bowl and is made fresh in front of you. The noodles are served in a nice thick broth coupled with generously sliced pineapples and cucumbers to give it the extra sweetness and topped with thick slices of ikan kembung and mint leaves. Eaten all together will definitely bring satisfaction to your tummy.
Next up, the hainanese chicken rice balls which comes with a side of tau geh ( a must with chicken rice) and a bowl of soup. Now you don’t have to drive all the way to Malacca for a good plate of chicken rice balls cause you can get it all here in PJ. Plus the chicken rice balls are much bigger than the ever shrinking chicken rice balls in Malacca. Chicken was tender and fresh and eaten together with the chilli, well, its as good as it gets. Delicious.
Also look out for their kuih keria (sweet potato donuts) which are made fresh daily. It a seller. Other must try house specials are the curry laksa, chikuteh, tomyam fried rice, ikan bakar and prawn mee.
They also deliver to the nearby offices during lunch hour to cater to the needs of those who are still being bossed around (no pun intended). So if you are working in Phileo Damansara and need a quick lunch but for some reason your boss won’t let you, give Mix a call and they’ll work something out (food wise).
** Delivery service of pre-ordered lunch packs to the office in Phileo Damanasara and Damansara Heights area (Minimum order of RM100) between 11am – 12:30pm. Further enquiries email doorstepdelivery@gmail.com or call 016-2631135.
(Note: The menus hanging on the walls were painted by my mum. Just thought i’ll add that in..haha).
