Miss having that restaurant with the olden days charm? Well, Wong Kwong Chun in Setapak is one of the older restaurants in Setapak that continues to serve good food till today. They serve an assortment of dishes and if you are not too sure what to order, they will be able to recommend some dishes too.
The interior of the restaurant is littered with newspaper cuttings of the restaurant, teapots, and even coal-powered irons. Talk about a blast to the past.
To start off the meal, they recommended the Heong Siew Ngap, or fragrant duck. The duck appears to have been deep fried whilst leaving the meat still tender. A sweet plum sauce and a chilli mixture with lime accompanied the dish and enhanced the flavours even more.
This is an interesting dish. The fish fillets are fried and cooked together in a thick sauce with lotus root. The fish used is fresh and is complemented well with the lotus root.
Their Kailan with siew yoke was a surprising treat. Typically, you would expect that the skin of the pork is soft after being fried with the vegetables, but not this one. The skin was still nice and crispy and the vegetables of course bright green and fresh.
This is a dish that we noticed another table ordering which looked rather tempting, so we couldn’t help ourselves but also try a small plate of yee mee with pork. Always helps to see what other people are ordering as it turned out to be a pleasant dish.
This fragrant pork rib dish, Heong So Kuat was tender and juicy. A dish that definitely goes well with a bowl of rice. Overall the food was a treat and an interesting find if you happen to be around Setapak.
