A family friend who is also a food enthusiast recently brought us to this place in Ampang where they sold the famous ‘Pillow Pau’ or ‘Pau Bantal’.
We were instantly curious as to what in the world a ‘Pillow Pau’ was as we had never heard of it before. I expected a pau in a shape of pillow and the reality was not too far from expectations.
Getting there we were warmly greeted by the owner Mr Leong. After talking to him, we found out that he only just set up stall here 2 years ago. He learnt his pau making craft from a master sifu in Sitiawan. So it must be good.
He was very friendly, showing us all the different types of pillow pau and we were very impressed. Firstly cause it really was in a shape of a pillow (see for yourself) and also by the many different types of fillings he had for the pau.
He also sells the normal pau shaped pau apart from the pillow pau.
They have all sorts of different fillings that you can think of. To name a few, they have the usual Kaya, Planta, Kacang Merah and then the unusual ones such as green tea, coffee, pumpkin, petai!!!?? and nam yi (fatty pork?), pulut ayam and the lists goes on. Interesting isn’t it.
And the prices are all very reasonable are fairly reasonable with the starting price of a normal pau at RM1.50 while the pillow pau starts at RM4.40 for one. You can also request for the un-steamed pau, which you can keep refrigerated at home. To eat, you steam it for 2 minutes over boiling water.

oh! we would loooooove to try the petai one!! Haha.. :p

I tried the petai pau… haha. It was a little dry actually… didn’t eat it when it was fresh and it had cooled down a bit.
I’d rather eat petai in other forms than in a pau. But the peanut butter pillow pau I had was really nice. The pau texture is very soft and fluffy…

Yea you should..the texture was very light and fluffy. But remember to eat it when its hot, thats the best time to eat it.

Thanks Sue Ann for the tips. I always love my food to be really hot. I suppose that makes all the food yummy! planning to try my hands on pau making, hope it turns out.

haha..let us know how it goes!! Have never tried making pau before. Looks pretty tough.

i think the tricky part of pau makin is the part where u gotta wrap and fold the skin. i saw it over youtube n it sure looks tricky. i find foldin gyoza much easier than foldin the pau’s skin.

It’s a good thing that there’s an abundance of pau all over the place for us to handily buy and eat…
Never tried making pau from scratch before, would be quite an interesting experience…

Indeed it was an interestin experience! I made pau today and granny was happily eating away. There’s so much room for improvement , dont know wht went wrong with my pau. My pau ended up lookin like it has got acne on it!!
