After walking around Tropicana city, we decided to stop at the Otak – Otak Place for lunch. We were looking for something local, and reasonably price, hence we ended up here.
We were welcomed into the restaurant with songs of the late Theresa Ting playing in the background and also a old video of P. Ramlee playing on the old tv set in front of the counter. For the 60s babies, I’m sure this place will bring back lots of memories. With walls lined with old soda bottles from the past, and even jars of ‘guli’ marble, plastic toy soldiers, the rubber band skipping ropes, this really makes you reminisce of the good ol’ days. They even have an old antique bicycle propped up from the ceiling.
Even the menu looks like an old school note book. They definitely get a 10 on ambience. They also provide board games like snakes and ladders, or old maid for you to play while waiting for your food. I found out they also sell ‘ 5 stones’ a game me and my friends used to play when I was a kid in primary school.
Getting down to business, we placed our orders after browsing through the notebook menu. There were also some recommendations written/ drawn on the board on top of the drinks area.
Our orders that day were
Nasi Lemak Otak Otak RM7.90
Soto Ayam RM7.90
Hainanese Chicken Rice RM 8.90
We were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived in little tin canisters. The ones used back in the old days to pack food home. Very original. They are served in the canister and the waiter will open it up for you and lay out your food.
Obviously named after their famous otak otak, I ordered the otak otak nasi lemak which came with a piece of fried otak otak. The otak otak served is nice, not too spicy, a little bit oily, but its fried so I guess some oil is alright. They have other versions of otak otak as well, from steamed, to grilled and fried as you can see below. Even Otak Otak Pao!
But we were quite full that day, so we didn’t order it. But i’ve tried their original otak otak that and I quite like it. You should give it a try while you are there. Their steamed otak otak is also not bad. It comes wrapped in banana leaf.
The soto ayam was nothing much to shout about. It was a mixture of both nasi impit and bee hoon and came in a claypot. The broth was so – so, but this can’t beat the ones sold in the stalls outside.
Lastly is the Hainanese Chicken Rice dish. They were very generous with the chicken , and though the rice was a bit hard that day, it was overall a good meal. It also comes with tau geh and bok choi ( if i’m not mistaken) and a bowl of soup. Quite worth it for Rm8.90.
While waiting for the food, we were browsing through their old recipe books found on the side and we came across this recipe. Chicken and Durian Soup??!!! Doesn’t sound like a good combination to me, but maybe the durian addicts might want to try it out. Let me know how it goes. I’m quite curious myself, but I have no intention on trying it. haha.
Otak – Otak place has 2 other outlets. One in 1 Utama and another in Giant at Kota Damansara.
