Recently, we were looking for something light to eat, since we have been over indulging the past few weeks. Its starting to take a toll on us, so my dad suggested Teo Chew Porridge. Easy to digest, easy to eat. We heard of a good place in PJ State area, and decided to try our luck there.
We got there just before it started to pour. Its been raining awfully a lot these days. Managed to get a seat and placed our orders. As you can see, its the typical Teo Chew style cooking, where almost everything is braised. Braised Pork Knuckle, Braised Duck, Braised Tau Fu, Braised Egg….haha. These Teo Chews sure like braising stuff ( I can say that cause i’m half Teo Chew).
You can tell business is good when you see this giant cauldron of porridge boiling in the corner. Nice hot steaming porridge on a cold rainy day.
You also cannot discount the sight of the giant ‘Tong’ of braised duck as well. You can only find this sight in Malaysia. Look a the amount of ducks they have prepared to feed the hungry mouths of Malaysians. They are confident enough to prepare a huge amount of ducks cause they know that many will be coming to patronize their shop. Though i really hope that they don’t carry forward any un-eaten ducks to the next day, with the ‘Malaysia Boleh’ spirit. I doubt it though as they were many people there that day. Fingers crossed.
Our orders that night were
Braised Duck
Braised Egg
Braised Pork Knuckle
The only un-braised dish Ham Choy
Total bill was RM30 odd
We ordered half a duck for the 4 of us. Look at the meat. Mmmm. It tasted pretty good, the meat a bit on the tough side, but then again, duck meat is always on the tough side. Not bad la.
Braised pork knuckle, came its shining glory. One thing good about braising, is that the meat is very very tender and falls off the bone easily, making it easier to eat. ( I’m a lazy eater, don’t like bones).
The braised eggs..There’s something about these eggs. I’m not exaggerating here, but it tasted really really good. Maybe cause it was very firm, maybe because of the braised sauce they used, or maybe because they cut it using a piece of nylon string ( no knife) it just tasted delicious. And its just an egg!!?? It baffles me. You must try the egg here. On this particular night it was really tasty.
Lastly, our faithful plate of ham choy. You cannot , and I emphasize again CANNOT eat Teo Chew Porridge without your ham choy. I always must have my ham choy when I eat porridge, or else it feels as if you are missing something. I love ham choy. haha.
And our big bowl of porridge. I found the teo chew porridge varies a bit from the normal teo chew porridge I’m accustomed to. The ones I normally eat are really watery, and you can still see the rice, but this one was starchier, and the rice seems to have melted into the broth. Oh well, it tasted good la, so no complaints.
All in all, good place to come to for something light. Get there early, so that you’ll get a place to sit. ( Don’t worry bout the food running out though with one whole ‘tong’ of duck, you can’t go wrong). Cheap and good. Healthy too.

I am not a PJ person but the place is always PJ New Town, someone please confirm.
I have been to this duck stall many times over the years and each time I left I always felt unsatiated because of not enough duck eaten. Four person to a duck gives very little meat per person. These days the ducks used are skinny and minus all the bones, you will feel like ordering another half duck. Maybe braising ducks requires these small lean ducks. I know there ducks that are very big. Perhaps not suitable. Anyone can help explain?

There is a similar braised Teochew duck restaurant in Cheras between the Leisure Mall and the Pantai Cheras Hospital. Let me go and cover it the next available opportunity. This place even has braised large intestines that go well with the ham choy.

Hi Uncle SG, yeap the duck was quite small… either because restaurants are cutting down the size, or like you said, smaller, leaner, boney ducks give the best taste?
Let us know how the Teochew duck in Cheras tastes like… is it also served with porridge? Or mainly with rice?

Been to the Cheras place many times when it was a stall by the roadside. Now they have upgraded themslves to an un-aircond restaurant, which I have been only once.
Quality wise quite at par with Kam Heong.

The hokkien prawn mee sold during breakfast and lunch at Restaurant Kam Heong is authentic from Penang. However the price slightly steep.

yea, this place is packed in the morning. Especially sundays before and after church service. People just crowd around tryin to get seat and the famous meals are the prawn mee and also the seafood porridge which comes in a claypot. You have to queue up to order.
