We were treated to a feast at Gonbei Japanese restaurant not long ago and we certainly relished the whole experience. (Thanks YTL!)![]()
Gonbei is situated on the ‘Relish’ floor of Starhill Gallery, and you won’t miss it. The design of this restaurant is so unique, with the entrance made from bamboo which forms a bamboo tunnel leading into the restaurant. While you go in, the waiters will bang on the giant drum outside to inform the restaurant that the guests has arrived ( like VIP). They also inform them how many people are coming cause the number of times they hit the drum signifies the number of people who will be dining.
Artistically designed with an authentic Japanese feel, it can’t get anymore Japanese than this. They have 5 different counters, Teppanyaki, Sushi,Robatayaki, Tempura and Sake. They have paid fine attention to cater to all 5 senses of the human body to enhance our dining experience.
Now lets get started on the food shall we? First off, you definitely must have sashimi, but not just any sashimi, but Sashimi Fuji.
Look at it in all its shining glory. I literally drooled when I saw this. They had different cuts of sashimi, with the usual salmon, mackerel, butterfish thrown in with some scallop, octopus and toro. Toro is like the kobe beef of tuna, or another name for it is fatty tuna. It was soo good. It melts in your mouth. Awesome.
The 3 different maki we had that night consisted of Dragon Maki, Soft Shell Crab Maki and Salmon Maki. Beautifully and tastefully presented. The ebi tempura ( prawn ) in the dragon maki was very crunchy unlike those we get in the usual restaurants where it has that ‘masuk angin’ texture. So was the soft shell crab ( one of our favourites) and the salmon maki, well, see for yourself, and you know that tasted good.
We also had sake kushiyaki which was skewered grilled salmon. The skewers used were lemongrass, so it gave it a subtle lemongrass flavour to the whole thing.
One of the last dishes to arrive was the Gyu Kushiyaki, the grilled wagyu beef. Four pieces of succulent wagyu beef on skewers, with teriyaki sauce. Each bite melts in your mouth, almost like butter. You don’t get to eat this everyday, so we enjoyed every single bit.
Lastly, since we were all too stuffed to eat, we just finished off the meal with a scoop of green tea ice cream, topped off with red beans. We also tried the black sesame ice cream, which is highly recommended. Very rich in flavour, its like eating black sesame tong sui made into an ice cream.
Gonbei also has a buffet very Saturday,Sunday and public holidays. Starting with a buffet lunch and a buffet dinner in the evening. The price Rm78++ for lunch and Rm88++ for dinner. Something to consider

Hopefully the management will read about this and start doing something about it.
Sometimes, they need a lil wake up call to realise that some improvements need to be made about the service and food quality.

I been there few days ago n was very tremendously disappointed over d food variety and quality.
Where were d Toro, Salmon Maki n Dragon Maki mentioned by d author?
Where were d Wagyu beef tat supposed to melt in my mouth?
Bsides limited choices, their grilled salmon fish head & kushiyaki was overgrilled and not juicy at all.
Their ebi tempura, ebi & Gyu teppanyaki were absolutely tasteless, probably keep too long in fridge. For a 5-star rate of RM88++ /pax, their food & service r hardly 3 -star’s. Even a smaller set up like Zen at Sunway Pyramid can do better at cheaper cost (at RM55++/pax), not to mentioned the famous Japanese buffet at Genji, P.J.Hilton, Kampachi at Equtorial, or Gen at The Legend (all 5-star Hotels with price ranged around RM78 – RM88++ but much fresher and tastier with long spread of satisfying food variety). Felt cheated by the author!
