FT: The Salad Bar, Damansara Uptown

The Salad Bar-6 The salad bar is the new cafe on the joint in Damansara Uptown. Just  only 3 months old, the salad bar is a new breed of restaurants promoting healthy eating. This restaurant was started by 3 partners who realised that the Malaysian diet consisted of too much meat (we at FML can contest to that..haha) , and wanted to have a healthier alternative available. Hence the birth of ‘The salad bar’. And don’t get it wrong, this is not a wholly 100% vegetarian place, but it promotes a balance way of eating with more emphasis of fresh greens.

Something to note when speaking to the owner Harry,  he mentioned that most Malaysian’s version of healthy living is organic food. What we don’t know is that despite organic food being chemical free, the nutrients in these ingredients will still be lost when subjected to cooking. So, the nutritional value in the end would be almost the same as any other non organic dish. On the other hand, when eating these ingredients fresh, you will get to maximise the nutritional value, as the nutrients are still retained in its natural state. Anyway, enough of the ‘science’ talk, let’s get down to business. The food.

The Salad Bar-10

We started off our meal with the aptly named salad, ‘Superman’ because its packed with high protein and, need I mention, fibre. The salad was a mix of red coral romaine, butterhead, pumpkin, prunes, wheat flakes, sausages a hard boiled egg and drizzled with honey mustard sauce. The honey mustard sauce is home made and very unique as they incorporated youghurt to it. The red coral added that little tinge of bitterness to the salad which balanced off the sweetness from the honey mustard, and the wheat flakes gave it that added crunchy texture. The ingredients were very fresh as they are delivered daily and are local.

We also tried their ‘ Chili Mushroom Pasta’ which was one of their most wanted dishes on the menu. A very simple dish with spaghetti, mushroom and garlic drizzled with olive oil and topped with black pepper and parmesan cheese. Very simple, very light. This dish is catered to the Malaysian taste buds as well, cause of spicy peppery kick you get at the end.

We also tried their L.C.C.T sandwich. Which stands for Lettuce, Cucumber, Chicken and Tomatoes all tucked into the sandwich. To be honest, we were glad to have some meat in our dish being the carnivores that we are, but it was a very well balance sandwich, again with the high emphasis of freshness of the vegetables. It went down very well with us.

We also tried their ‘Fruity Nuthouse’ salad. Its name pretty much sums it up. A combination of iceberg lettuce, butterhead, honeydew, apples, pumpkin seeds, pamelo, cashew nut and almonds and finished off with a sweet plum dressing which is also home made. This was one of our favourites. It was very refreshing and the fruits gave it the added sweetness. I especially liked the pamelo because every pamelo released a burst of sweet goodness. Normally, they have starfruit in this salad, but because they didn’t have starfruit that day, they substituted it with pamelo, which I think tasted better. The Salad Bar-28

We ended our meal with a bowl of freshly made mushroom soup. When they say mushroom soup, they really mean mushroom soup. They put in almost a kg of mushrooms to make this soup and also topped it up with potatoes for the starchy texture. A healthy alternative to the ones they serve outside, they even laid back on the salt, which I feel is a good way if you want to stay healthy.

The salad bar is a new breed of upcoming restaurants, with the society starting to turn to healthy living, I believe its a matter of time before more of these restaurants start popping up. Furthermore, it also contributes to the environment because less meat = less livestock = less deforestation = less greenhouse gas emissions. So, you get the added benefit of feeling good helping out the environment as well ;)

They also offer custom made salads, where you can come in and pick and choose your own ingredients. The ingredients are kept fresh all day as they have a special counter chiller which seals in the freshness. Come and try their fresh juices too as they have a quite a few combinations. I’ll be back when I need my healthy fix :)
