FT: Opus Bistro, Jalan Bangkung Bangsar

Away from the hustle and bustle of the busy part of Bangsar, tucked away in a little street called Jalan Bangkung lies Opus Bistro. This trendy modern restaurant is amongst a row of other eateries along this very same stretch. We had the privilege to dine at this establishment in our ever continuing search for more of Kuala Lumpur’s fine foods. Besides the extensive menu that is available, there are other monthly specials that are on offer as well as set lunches to cater to the office crowds. I have to say that you get a very warm feeling when you dine here, so it’s probably no wonder that there are some regular customers that stay on till late in the night. Now, on to the food!

Opus Bistro

The first dish that we were treated to was the Seafood Antipasti Platter. It is a combination of baked scallops and prawns, fresh clams in white wine sauce, and mussels in arrabiatta sauce. In the far distance you can see the fresh clams which were very juicy. I also enjoyed the mussels as it had that extra oomph from the fresh arrabiatta sauce.

The Opus Shellfish Surprise was next up on the menu. Laden full of goodies from the sea, this first course dish had enough to share between two or even make for a wholesome starter. The key theme as with many of the other dishes was the freshness of the seafood used. In terms of flavours, my tastebuds found the soup to be slightly on the sweet side and would have been perfect with just a tad more spice. Other than that, I’m sure you’d be looking to scrap the bowl clean when you’re done.

I have to admit, I am a sucker when it comes to mushrooms. When you top it off with mozarella cheese, I’m sold. The large grilled portobello mushrooms and the cheese make a perfect combination, so for those who have yet to try such a dish, I would recommend it. The rocket salad add some colour to what would otherwise be a plain dish. A tasteful dish that you can’t go wrong with.

Next we move on to the risotto. This is a wild mushroom and asparagus risotto. If you are looking for a simple dish to go along with your glass of white wine, then this could be an option for you. The dish is presented well and we found that the asparagus compliments the dish rather well.

Ahh, and now we come to the Spaghetti alla Opus. What more can I say. This is the dish that made Opus bistro famous and it is no wonder that the simple things in life always seem to be the right way to do things. The fresh tomato sauce and seafood is a combination that I am sure you will find in many restaurants, and it is just that simplicity in the dish with the combination of fresh ingredients that have made this dish the way it is.

This would be the highlight of the night for me. Opus famous roasted cod with choice of white wine sauce or lemon caper sauce. I can see why this is noted as their customer’s all time favourite dish. The cod with or without the sauce was perfectly roasted; lightly charred on the outside, tender on the inside. The only problem, if you consider it a problem, is that I craved more of it after it was all gone. I would highly recommend this dish when you are at Opus, perhaps taking that special someone out for a nice dinner.

These are the sauces that go with it. I like the lemon caper sauce which is really addictive.

Alright, now I’m sure that by now, you would be as full as we were even just by looking at all that food. But we know by now that most of you have a second stomach when it comes to desserts. What we enjoyed about Opus Bistro is that they paid attention to the desserts as much as they did the main courses. The tiramisu is a classic dessert that you can’t go wrong with.

What we found absolutely fantastic was their Chocolate Desire. Oozing with chocolaty goodness, they have taken the time, no-shortcuts, to make a chocolate lava flow that is best eaten right away. Together with the warmness of the chocolate is a nice scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

What other perfect ending to a meal can you imagine. Look at that chocolate flow!

If you are in for a dining experience with prompt service and a relaxing atmosphere, then you’ve come to the right place. Opus Bistro caters to various crowds; from the lunchtime office crowds to private functions which can also be accessed via their reservations online. Do also look out for their monthly specials and a good start would be to ask for specials for the day and recommendations from the waiters who would be more than happy to help out.
