Email Interview With backStreetGluttons.com

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing a team of fellow food bloggers over at backStreetGluttons.com.

1) Can you give us an introduction of yourself, when and how did you start out and what made you love food so much to start a blog about it?

We started off using Blogspot from Google in August 2006 after we read in the papers about some top food KL blogs in the net and decided we could also do some experiment with the net and talk about our experiences with all the strange food we have taken all over the places , especially in the backlanes.

Our objective was to highlight special dishes/places which people talk about with some passion, on top of getting familiar with the free blogging software. Our involvement with blogging was thus not so much because we love food so much but rather because we like to talk about the food that many ppl talk about , but from our point of view , which could be totally different from another perspective as eating is about one’s experience in the place , the people the packaging etc.

We seldom go into serious details about the food itself as such, as the enjoyment or not of food is very personal. We are basically corporate people with some involved in own business ventures..

2) I understand your site has been up for a really long time and is now one of the top food blog sites in Malaysia. What do you think is the key factor to your success?

Not that long really, about 2 years + a few months. Probably our readers follow our blog as being not serious and sometimes we do write about some strange places and strange food! With some other things thrown in.

3) What is it about your website that you are most proud of?

We are different from the normal cafe / top restaurant over-reviews . Indeed we have noticed many food bloggers blog about the same old “famous” places. We avoid cafes if we can , unless there is something funny or different.

4) What is your favourite food of all time?

Assam laksa and some Thai pungent dishes.

5) Currently, what is the one tip about food blogging you would give to new food bloggers?

Talk about experiences, not so much about the food, afterall we have to leave food preparation and tastes to the real experts.

6) What do you think about the food culture we currently have in Malaysia?

Not so original. mostly same type of dishes same style in many new cafes . some of the new cafes in shopping malls look plastic, like some imports. the honky and european influence is quite strong . We are not so sure about the malaysian identity, except for the old ( 30 years ) hawker stalls or those behind the main roads

7) Your final thoughts about food you’d like to share with the Feedmelah.com readers?

Waitresses / shopowners have to improve basic customer service/etiquette which is non existent in some shops. Try to promote local food and raise it to a new level of cleanliness and presentation. Use clean utensils! Really believe that a customer is King! Customers also have to exercise respect for the shops and have understanding too. Life and making $$ is not easy.
