Restoran Veng Soon after the storm

Having just recently bought The Star Street food guide, we decided to head down to Section 1 and see whether we can find any of the restaurants listed in the book . True enough, not long after entering Section 1, I saw the famous Restoran Veng Soon on one of the rows of shoplots.

Inside of the restaurant, while our backs are being pelted by rain

On that particular evening, it was raining cats and dogs or better put, raining lions and wolves. It was a huge thuderstorm. We were lucky we got there before it poured. The place was packed, a good tell tale sign that we were in the right place.

Once we got a seat, as if on cue, the sky unleashed its full fury. It rained so hard and the wind was soo strong it was blowing the rain inside the shop. BUT, despite that, there was throngs of people arriving with their umbrellas dripping wet, just to eat here. There were people still willing to take a table on the five foot walkway in the pouring rain. They were literally being drenched in the rain. And one of the tables even brought along their pet dog!! I was amazed…

We ordered

One Big Chicken Claypot Rice

Watercress Soup

Tau Geh ( Bean Sprouts)

Total RM 23

THE Famous claypot chicken rice

This place serves only one type of claypot and that is the famous chicken claypot rice. One big portion is enough for 3 people or maybe 2 if you are a big eater. The rice is very nice and fluffy, not too oily, and the chicken was so tender, you can peel it off the bone so easily. It also had some chinese sausages which gave that bit of sweetness to the whole dish and not to mention some sliced ginger as well for extra kick!

Eating this with the bright flashes of lightning and being pelted in the rain was definitely an experience. I wanted to take a picture of the rain and lightning, but the rain was too strong, and I was afraid my camera would get wet. Thats how strong the rain was.

Double Boiled Watercress Soup

Next came our watercress soup which was doubled boiled in a huge steamer beside us. They used pork bones to make the base of the soup.

This place is also known for their coconut chicken soup which comes in the coconut husk, but it was sold out when we got there. So remember to order that the next time you are there. I can’t remember the name exactly , but just tell the aunty ‘coconut soup’ aka ‘ye ji tong’ she’ll know what you want :) You have to go early too!

Lastly was our tau geh dish. Nothing special, a very standard dish but just thought I put the picture in, cause its a good shot. LoL. Just remember when you come here, stick to their claypot rice and their ‘coconut soup’ . You won’t go wrong there. There is a reason why this place is in The star street food guide.

But I need to point out one thing though, to get a side of salted fish to go with your claypot rice, you must pay an additional RM3. Which I personally think its not worth it, since it ought to be given complimentary with the rice as other usual claypot stalls do.

oo i’m sure the charcoal flamed ones are really tasty. That is the real way of doing it. But most of the shops now use the gas stoves since its faster and more efficient, but i’ll go for charcoal flamed ones anytime, since i’m sure they will taste much better!!

ah claypot chicken rice….another favorite of mine. The taugeh looks nice too but in my opinion the best taugeh dish is still from Ipoh. For RM23 its good value. Food is still very cheap in M’sia.

Yes this place was particularly cheap. But food prices in KL have gone up and is still going up. I can’t figure out why. Even a bowl of noodles now in the hawker centers cost RM4.50. It used to be RM3!!

    Where are you currently residing?

Yea, i have to admit Bangsar is overcrowded, getting a car park there takes ages. But there are new places mushrooming up now like Hartamas, TTDI, kota d’sara, all packed with places to wine and dine. :) You could give a go when u are back.
