We were recently invited by the creators for Hot Can to attend their launch of the new Hot Can. As the name goes, hot can is a new product in the market where it actually self heats itself and keeps your coffee warm throughout. It was pretty fascinating.

The evening began with an opening speech by hot can creator Dato Kenneth Warren Kob who is also the CEO of Hot Can Sdn Bhd. With cigar and a hot can in hand, he showed us how to activate the mechanism in the can to heat up the coffee.  We were also shown a short presentation of how the actual workings of the hot can work to heat up the drink inside.

The theory behind how it works is actually pretty simple. The can is made up of a special double chambered aluminium can that holds the beverage in the outer chamber. In the inner chamber, they filled it with calcium oxide or otherwise known as quick lime. When the button at the bottom of the can is pressed, water is released into the quicklime starting a reaction that releases heat. The heat released will heat the contents on the can by 50C- 55C in less than 3 minutes.

We were later treated to try out a hot can. We tried out a few flavours such as the hot chocolate and latte. I quite love it especially since the hot chocolate was very rich in flavour. And it stayed hot for a long time as well. We were all pretty fascinated by the whole thing.

First you have to peel off the seal at the bottom of the can, then press down in the middle until you hear a little click. And then start shaking the can abit and let it sit and watch it heat up before your eyes. Some of the cans even had smoke coming out of them which was pretty cool.

There is also 2 indicative stickers on the can. Once the stickers have turned green then you know your drink is ready to go. But be careful, it can get quite hot. So make sure the stickers are green before sipping on your drink.

The drinks come in many different flavours such as hot choclate, caffe latte, mocha. Plus, they will be launching soups sometime in coming year. I’m quite looking forward to that since I could really use some hot soup in my super cold office.

Try out a can if you see one, the hot cans are available at cold storage or at some of the shops in the petrol stations.

A short while back, at the Qba courtyard in the Westin Kuala Lumpur, The Grand Annual Latin American Fiesta was held.

It was a packed event as you would expect with different nationalities enjoying the ambience, food and all-round fun.

They also had Guarana drinks available. Guarana is native to the Amazon basin and is commonly found in Brazil. It’s an energy booster drink packing in twice the amount of caffeine compared to coffee beans.

Food Bloggers Night at Nagomi

Like a celebrity event, there were plenty of food bloggers who enjoyed the night out.

We made our first mark of the night on the signatures sheet, and were about to gain more recognition for Feedmelah.com in the other events of the night.

In preparation for the food bloggers arrival, the staff were well organised. They made sure that all the necessary preparations were ready for the big night.

We started the night with an assorted sashimi platter (rm45). As you can see, you get two pieces each of sake, maguro akami, tako, kisu, butterfish and hokkigai. This is all served on a bed of crushed ice to keep the sashimi as fresh as possible.

Another starter that I always enjoy is the soft shelled crab rolls.

Seeing that we were a restaurant that served shabu shabu, we decided to try a variety of meats that go with the broth (comes in variety of spicy, chicken and Nagomi flavours). We start it off with well-marbled kobe beef slices.

Next up, a plate of chicken. Now, some might not know what to do with the egg and minced meat in the middle.

We were fortunate enough to have one of the staff members come over to help us make meat balls out of it.

We tried it ourselves, but it didn’t turn out so well. Looks like quite a mess doesn’t it? Well,  our advice would be to get one of the staff to help you out with it!

Each meat dish comes with a big plate of vegetables, mushrooms, and tofu. After the broth starts to boil, the vegetables add to the flavour of the soup and make for a very filling meal.

Besides having a wonderful dinner, the organisers had lined up several events. The first was a demonstration by their sushi chef on how to cut the big salmon trout. Indeed it was a big salmon trout (too bad we didnt get to have a bite of it).

After slicing up the body of the fish, there was still work to be done. The chef then used a pair of tweezers to pick out the bones that he felt with his other hand (hope he didn’t use the tweezers for anything else). This is an important step to ensure that the salmon is boneless.

After all the bones were out, he sliced the large chunk of salmon to smaller cuts. At that point in time everyone wanted to take a piece back with them as the cuts of salmon looked as fresh as they can get.

He then took some cling wrap and sealed the cuts of salmon which were ready for the sushi chef to prepare for the coming orders of salmon sashimi.

The next event was the sushi demonstration and competition.

The necessary fillings and ingredients were set on the table and ready for the sushi chef to show off his skills, and for a chance for Feedmelah.com to make an entrance to the competition.

Next, Feedmelah.com were selected to participate in the sushi making competition. Sue Ann stepped up to represent Feedmelah.com together with two other contestants.

This is the final product. The competition and jugding of the hand rolls were based on the form, ingredients and presentation of the hand roll. As for the final verdict, how did Feedmelah fare against the other participants?

It sounds like a war cry for Feedmelah.com right? Let’s Go Mamak… Again!

But it’s actually the name of a group of jazz and ethnic instrument players, who will be playing at the KL Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC) in July.

We know this is a food blog, but with a name like ‘Let’s Go Mamak’, we just couldn’t resist writing a post about them.

But more than that, one of our friends is the pianist in the group (Tay Cher Siang), an extremely talented individual, whose fingers dance along his instrument at extremely high speeds.

Let’s Go Mamak… Again, is actually the sequel to their first appearance last year (aptly named ‘Let’s Go Mamak’) and is made up of 12 musicians, playing a mix of classical jazz instruments as well as local Malaysian instruments (Tabla, Gamelan, Cak Lempong amongst others).

The amazing thing is that they manage to mix the different styles of music that all the instruments play and bring it together in a way which makes it seem that this combo of instruments has always been played like this.

The original performance won 4 BOH Cameronian Arts Awards for their 2008 performance!

The Feedmelah.com team will be there along with some of our friends. We encourage anyone and everyone to go and support our local arts scene. You’ll find out just how talented Malaysian musicians really are!

We made our way to Starhill Gallery on Jalan Bukit Bintang for one of the many countdowns, this one organized by YTL Corporation BHD.

They arranged some short presentations, performances and generally an information session to inform the public that the reason behind Earth Hour was not to save electricity for 1 hour, but to collect support for climate change initiatives…

After the lights dimmed out, me and Sue Ann took a quick walk outside to see what the rest of the businesses, shopping malls and government building were doing in support of Earth Hour…

It was still pretty bright on Jalan Bukit Bintang, although some of the shops in the Pavilion did dim their lights.

I thought it’d be darker, because according to these pictures from The Star, it looked a lot more impactful than it felt on the ground.

Well at least there was support for the event and hopefully people are starting to change their mindset on global warming and our environment.

Feast your eyes on this

For my uncle this year, with him still being a bachelor and all, we decided to mess with him and order him a cupcake cake made out of corsets, bikinis and tushes. When we opened the box, we were awe struck. It looked too good to eat. Look at it.

We got this from a family friend who has gone into baking cupcakes full time. And its a good thing she did, look at the detail of each cupcake. Each cupcake is delicately decorated up to the finest details from the tiny ribbons on the corset to the fishnet stockings.

The white cupcakes were actually orange flavored butter cake while the chocolate ones were obviously chocolate. Moist and deliiiciouss…We were all pretty reluctant to dig in, but in the end, once we started on the first cupcake we just couldn’t stop.

First thing on the ‘Christmas’ menu was Zhong’s very special hand bought satay. You’ve never had satay for Chrismas? Well you should try it… it’s ‘different’.

The feature meal for the night was this turkey we got from Vary Pasta. It wasn’t that big at 3.5kg, but it was more than enough for all of us there that night. I chose a turkey with bread crumbs and almond stuffing because that’s what the chef had told me was the traditional way of having it.

A rough assortment of the dishes we had that night. It included potato salad, mashed potato, roasted vegetables, Mexican tortilla raps and an assortment of deserts.

Did I mention that I made a Christmas lasagne for the dinner? Unfortunately, I had layered the layers in the wrong order and ended up with the top layer being the lasagne sheets. I called my new disaster creation the ‘Upside Down Lasagne’.

A mismatched meal of sorts, but all in all, great food and great company. Maybe this year I’ll make an inside out chicken or something.
