We have been looking for a place that served authentic Mexican food, and after asking around, one of our friends, Xiao recommended us to try this place, Caliente in Kota Damansara. (Caliente means ‘HOT’ in Spanish).
The interior was nice and cozy, dimly litted and some nice cushy wall seats. We pretty much got the whole restaurant to ourselves cause its still very new and also we went there early as well.
Our orders that night were :-
Nachos Grande RM11.50
Grilled Beef/Chicken Buritos RM14.50
Chicken and Beef Fajitas RM15.00
Beef Tacos Rm13.50
Chicken Enchiladas RM12.95
Checken Chimichangga RM13.95
First up was our nachos grande to kick start our mexican meal. We were very impressed. The serving was big and topped with generous serves of melted mozarella and cheddar cheese, jalepeno peppers, olives, shredded lettuces and minced meat. And when dipped into the pico de gallo sauce…Ooolala…delicious.
Next up, our order of beef tacos came arranged nicely on a plate together with a side of salsa sauce. When you are eating a taco, you must use your hand to fully enjoy the flavour. Topped with lots of lettuce, minced meat, tomatoes, onions and lots of cheeeesssee.
The grilled chicken buritos came topped with a dollop of sour cream and cheese and also a side of mexican rice. The filling was thick juicy pieces of grilled chicken. Very tender and the flavour a perfect 10. Nice and piping hot. I was searching online about the difference between a burito and a enchilada but I couldn’t get a definite anwer. Some said that enchiladas are baked, and buritos are not, or enchiladas can be served stacked on each other or served flat?? I dunno, so if any of you have an idea, do let us know.
The chicken fajitas came with a basket of freshly made flour tortilla wraps, a hot plate with slices of grilled chicken, beef and caramelised onions and also a plate of fresh lettuce, tomatoes and shreded cheese. Assembly of your very own combination fajitas is strictly DIY. I must add, the meat was done to the par. Very juicy and very tender, especially the beef.
The pricing is very reasonable for real mexican food. Unlike those you get in chillis/ TGIF where an order of a Fajita tower can come up to at least RM29.90. This is only half the price.
Will definitely be back here for more Mexican cuisine. We loved this place and whats more we found out the chef used to work in a Mexican restaurant in the USA for 26 years before he came back to Bolehland to start his own Mexican restaurant. A definite must for those looking for real mexican cuisine.

Does the restaurant carry corn tortillas and beans? I have been living in KL for one year and havent had good mexican food yet. Las Caretas/Carlos/ <—– not mexican food!!!!
William, 2 years ago

Hi Jorge, if I’m not mistaken I think they do carry beans and corn tortillas.
But you can call him at the number above and ask him to convince you how authentic his food is if you want…
He’ll be more than happy to let you know about the ingredients and all I’m sure.

Is the restaurant still there? Wanted to try it out last Friday after reading your review but couldn’t locate the shop. I followed your location map. I even tried calling the phone no. given but no one answered.

Truthfully I’m not sure… I went by a week or two ago and it was still open for lunch. Maybe he went away for the long weekend?
I don’t think the owner is from KL, maybe he balik kampung?

I did a lunch some months ago after reading about Caliente on the foodblog. I know I was in trouble when the lunch special was Nasi Goreng Malaysia- maybe business was quite bad and so it had to attract the office lunch crowd. Food was a big disappointment for me and family. This really is Tex mex food- try Frontera at JayaOne but it will cost twice as much but you will enjoy it. There is authentic Mex restaurent- Sandias in Damansara Heights. Thanks for your lovely blogs- I am using it to add adventure to my weekend meals.

I think the place isn’t there anymore. Hope this helps.

foodfan: it’s sad to hear that, because when we went there the first time, it was really very nice… have not been back since, but I did notice the ‘nasi lemak’ specials that you’re talking about. We went to Frontera the other day, quite similar to TGIF I must admit, but still quite tasty… although more expensive like u mentioned.
We’re glad you like our blog, we’ll try our best to bring you more places to eat!
Jane: It closed down? Thanks for the update… Restaurants open and close far too quickly in Msia, no lasting power.
marine, 2 years ago

Jane : Thanks for your update. It really helps.
Foodfan : Thanks for the info. I had tried Frontera, nice food there but like you said, it costs twice as much. Too bad i didn’t have the chance to try out the food at Caliente. It’s a pity
.
William : Thanks for your reply.. So, Jane has helped us clear our doubts whether the owner balik kampung or not
. Good job done to you and your team. It helped me to find more places to eat in Klang Valley.
