FT: Japin Ramen, Sungei Wang Plaza
Japin was started by the Leows, a husband and wife team who had studied and worked in Japan for 6 years and who both had a passion for the Japanese style of cooking. After coming back to Malaysia, the Leows decided to develop their very own unique concept which soon lead them to the opening of the very first Japin outlet in Penang in year 2002.
Their first foray into the Klang Valley saw them open a Japin outlet in Sungei Wang Plaza in July of 2009.
The whole Feedmelah.com team went for this food tasting, with each of us ordering a different bowl of noodles to try a variety of their offerings.
I went for the ‘Chaysu Japin Ramen’ which had ramen with roasted pork in a rich soup broth. It’s been a while since I’ve had ramen and the first thing I noticed was that the soup broth had a more ‘herbal’ taste than regular ramen.
It felt like a Malaysianized version of the typical chaysu ramen and it went together pretty well, especially with this soft boiled egg with the yolk still oozing from it.
Steve had the Katsu Kara Ramen, which was a large breaded, fried piece of chicken chop on top of a bowl of noodles in a spicy soup.
Mr. Ho, the head chef of the outlet told us that all the soup bases and even the noodles were all made in-house, giving them a springy quality when biting into them.
Sue Ann had the ‘Kakuni Syoyu Udon’ which was an udon dish, unlike my ramen one and consisted of stewed pork in a soya sauce based sauce. Her udon also came with the soft boiled egg that mine came with.
After stepping out quickly to take pictures of the front of the shop, I came back to find to my surprise, more food!
A plate of fried dumplings or Gyoza as people normally refer to them as. The chilli flakes in oil on each table is a must. It had a roasted chili aroma, mixed with a slightly savoury taste, great for dipping your gyoza and meats in.
Finally, we were given a plate of grilled meats to try, or ‘Mikku Yaki Niku’, their mixed barbeque dish. It consisted of slices of chicken, beef and pork, the pork being my favourite of the three.
Especially nice with the chilli oil I described above.
