Restoran Hung Kee – Wan Tan Mee along Jalan Loke Yew

Hung Kee started out in the mid 1960s serving delicious wan tan mee and has since expanded to take two shop lots. Situated along the busy road of Jalan Loke Yew (near the pedestrian bridge), parking around this area can get limited depending on the time of the day. Also, the service in the restaurant has improved throughout the years as the food comes out alot quicker.

There are two shop lots side by side, one of which is air-conditioned. Depending on the crowd, you may have to wait for a table as they can get rather busy at times.

To whet our appetites, we started off with a plate of mushrooms and chicken feet. This is always a must for my dad as the mushrooms are nice and juicy.

The siew yoke here on the other hand was average. The meat was good, but some parts of the skin were not as crispy as I had hoped.

When you are here, you should try their wan tan mee. The noodles are delicious and have a springy texture; together with the black soya sauce, you can either have it topped off with meats like char siew, or order a whole plate of it separately. I was also told that the fried rice here is done rather well.

Each plate of noodles are of course accompanied by a big bowl of wan tan in broth.

Hung Kee under its previous owners is much better anytime in terms of its wan tan mee quality. After the ownership change I visited it a few times and was very disapointed. Since then I have not visited it for two years.
Maybe time to visit them one more time.Probably, they have improved.

I wonder what will happen to all those restaurants with ageing owners? I really hope their children take over the restaurant, lawyer, doctor or not.
Otherwise, we’ll in no time at all be losing a lot of the best food in Malaysia, never to get it back again.

I visited this place after reading so much about it in various blogs. The wantan mee is quite good but the char siew is of rather poor quality. It does not taste like it is charcoal roasted and the amount of meat is rather meagre. Much better char siew in Taman Cheras and plentiful in comparison. The wantan is not too bad. Unlikely to go for second visit.

I’m still quite a fan of the wan tan mee here with its springy texture but as for the char siew, will probably have to give the one in Taman Cheras a try. Where exactly is it?

Char siew at Taman Cheras (aka Taman Yulek). Enter Taman Cheras. T-junction with BHP petrol station on your left in front of you. Go straight, First turning on the right. Market in front. Go straight, first turning on right. Find parking. Endlot coffee shop in front of Seafood restaurant How Kee. A husband and wife team runs the business. Husband selling chicken rice with char siew, roast pork and ribs. Wife sellng wantan mee. There is also a fairly good Bak kut teh shop round the corner called Mustard Seeds.
Hope you can find it but be prepared to wait at least 15-30 minutes for your food.
