Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh – Klang

[Klang]

Bak Kut Teh (literally translated to “meat bone tea”) originated from Klang and has since spread throughout the country as well as to other countries. A friend of mine made a trip back from overseas and we decided to make the trip all the way to Klang to have brunch. This is one of his favourite places to have Bak Kut Teh, which was served in a claypot.

It was a really hot day, but from early till late morning, the restaurant is rather crowded. As you make your way through the crowd to find an empty table, you would also notice kettles of hot water placed on top of gas canisters. As a typical pairing, a cup of hot Chinese tea goes down well with a bowl of Bak Kut Teh. The hot tea helps to cleanse and clear the oil from the soup and pork.

The Bak Kut Teh here is served in a claypot. The soup is pre-made with a mixture of various Chinese herbs, pork bones and meat. In the soup, you get to add a variety of extra items like pork spare parts such as the intestines and stomach. This one had lettuce, mushrooms, tofu puffs and pork ribs. The soup here is nice and thick and after having a few bowls of soup, there isn’t too much use of MSG. Of course, you can also top up the soup on request.

For side orders, I always like to have it with a plate of Yau Char Kwai (Chinese Doughnut) which is deep fried dough. Dipping it in the Bak Kut Teh soup is just heavenly, as you get the slight crunchiness of the dough as well as the flavours soaked up from the soup. To round off the meal, we decided to have a simple plate of greens.

This place is also my fav. Apart from the hot water stations, I like their bigger pieces.

The bkt place in Jln Ipoh next to Dynasty Hotel, i went recently has exactly 4 miserable small pieces swimming in a bigger than usual bowl. I dont mind if they charge a bit more. I like to see abundance in my food !

Also, how do feel when a foreign worker takes your order for obscure portion of the pig. U wonder if they know. Like the trotter’s bend etc

    Uncle SG says:

Yes, during a trip there a week ago, they were not generous with the soup. We were not provided soup even though we ordered the Ca Koi which requires soaking. When the bowl of soup came it was a small one
Service was slower. There were some new Chinese nationals lady workers who were not attentive.
Otherwise, the food quality is good and their kitchen process saw them replenishing mid-morning, a task not easy to ensure the meat becomes tender for the next batch.
Wish we could communicate these minor shortcomings to them. Such eatery must flourish with our help.
