Restoran Barkat Roti John and Ayam Golek , Tanjung Kling, Malacca

Restoran Barkat Roti John

Restoran Barkat Roti John

My aunty brought us to this place with high recommendations. This place is a little stall set up by the beach, a nice place to chill and hang out at night (It was packed!!).They serve not only Roti John and Ayam Golek, but ikan bakar, masakan panas (??) and assam pedas according to their sign board. But we were there only for Roti John and some ayam goodness.

Got there, got a seat and started ordering. The Roti John here is different from the one in KL. As you can see, the bread is obviously longer and looks more like a french loave. ( French loave ala Melayu style). The filling used was a combination of sardines, onions, eggs, ikan billis and chili and it is eaten dipped in sweet chilli sauce. Well, it did taste really good and we ate every crumb. Apparently the name ‘John’ can be linked  to the western origin of the french loaf. Since every ‘ang moh’ were colloquially referred to the name John in Malay during the British Colonial days , hence the name Roti John came about..hmm..we learn something new each day. Roti John (RM3.50).

Next off, came our Ayam  Golek  (1/2 chicken RM8.50). This came with a side of lime which we generously squeezed over our meal before we dug in. We dug in using our bare hands, since, no utensils were provided which gave us the ‘back to nature’ feel and I do believe it made our meal taste better. The meat was juicy and tender and the flavor was just right. It was a good meal.

So good meal + good weather (sea breeze) = a must go when you are down in Malacca. This place is situated along the beach on Tanjung Kling, near Malacca Club. Give us a shout if you need directions, we’ll try our best to direct you. Good luck!

I lived nearby Pantai Kundur until 16 years old. Never visited the place for more than 10 years. Your sharing brings back my memories with grandma, coconut farm, belacan, had roti canai in a shop next to the sea without floor (the beach sand was the floor) and really old stories of their generation.

Hi KSY, yea, Malacca is such an old historic place, and growing up there during my childhood I see so many changes taking place. Everytime I go back, I see more land reclamation, more concrete buildings being erected. Its quite sad really. I hope they preserve the beach front. Especially this area, cause this is where the livelihood of the fishermen are, and people always come to this part of the beach for picnics and makan.I’m glad, we managed to help you reminisce…:)

Hi Cliff, try using the map above to locate the restaurant…

We’re not actually from Malacca, but it’s along the Tanjung Keling road, opposite the beach. You’ll be able to see it once you drive by.

There are alot of stalls on that same road.
